Over the last two decades of product development and brand evolution, the fragmentation of Burton’s packaging became excessive and wildly inconsistent across all product categories.

Ten Acre Creative and TVG Production collaboratively worked alongside Burton’s brand, supply chain, and product teams to streamline the design, development, and sustainability of the global packaging needs and goals for the Hardgoods, Softgoods, and Retail segments.

With a core focus on meeting Burton’s 2025 sustainability goals, the design and development required conscious consideration and pragmatic realignment, allowing the Burton brand, in both form and function, to thrive in the global marketplace.

Responsible & Eco-Friendly Packaging

To meet 2025 sustainability goals, Burton has focused on two objectives: sourcing low-impact materials and eliminating as much waste as possible. Burton aims to be landfill-free–which means all packaging will be at least 80% post-consumer recycled materials and be widely recyclable or compostable around the globe or at home.

Did someone say plastic? Microplastics have found their way onto our highest mountains and into our deepest oceans, and Burton believes packaging should not be part of the problem. They have joined the Responsible Packaging Movement to source only FSC-certified fibers and eliminate plastic in all packaging as soon as possible.

Hardgoods Packaging

Boards, boots, and bindings are the bread and butter of the Burton product line. They also comprise one of the brand’s most significant packaging carbon footprints. We redesigned board sleeves, boot boxes, binding boxes, each labeling system, and any internal hardware packaging requirements to eliminate previously included polybags.

As Burton continues their pursuit beyond 2025, they have partnered with Sway Seaweed Packaging to develop a board sleeve made of compostable seaweed.

Softgoods Packaging

Consumer insights studies facilitated by the Burton supply chain team revealed that only a small percentage of consumers read and retain the information on product hangtags beyond size, color, price, and a few top-tier features.

This feedback became crucial as we narrowed the number of hangtags on each garment from an average of 4, down to 2 at most, alongside removing all plastic swift tags and using hemp cord to secure hangtags through zipper pulls.

One of the most significant changes overall in the updated packaging system is the transition from plastic poly bags to paper bags for all garments.

Bags & Accessories

The real nitty-gritty. Bags and Accessories packaging needs to check several boxes- pun intended. Primarily, the packaging must be minimal, durable, dynamic, and responsibly sourced while effectively conveying information to the end user.

While this might seem straightforward with bag hangtags, the complexities grow as you dive deeper into socks, gloves, odd-shaped tools, and board wax.
